Light, especially UV

Heat

Oxygen

Oxygen drives the oxidation reactions that convert cannabinoids to CBN and degrade terpenes. This is why airtight containers beat anything that breathes, and why a mostly empty jar with a small amount of flower degrades faster than a full one — there is more air per gram. Consolidating into a smaller container as you work through your supply is a simple, free improvement.

Physical handling

A bonus enemy: rough treatment. Every time you paw through buds, shake a container, or carry flower loose in a pocket, trichomes break off. Handle buds by the stem where possible, keep containers still, and try not to open them more often than necessary, since each opening exchanges the internal atmosphere for room air.

Ideal Storage Conditions

Here are the targets. You do not need lab precision — getting close is more than enough.

Relative humidity: 55 to 62%

This is the consensus band and it is where properly cured flower behaves the way it should. At the low end, around 55%, flower is drier, grinds easily, and burns readily — some smokers prefer this. At the high end, around 62%, flower stays springy and aromatic with better terpene retention. Below about 50% you get brittleness, dust, and harshness. Above roughly 65% you enter genuine mold risk, and above 70% you should assume problems are coming.

Temperature: 60 to 70°F

Cool and stable is the goal, and stability matters as much as the number. Temperature swings drive moisture migration inside a sealed container, which is how you end up with condensation on the glass — the precursor to a mold problem. An interior closet in a climate-controlled part of the house is nearly always the best spot in a home. Avoid exterior walls, attics, garages, and anywhere near heat-producing appliances.

Darkness

Complete darkness is ideal. A drawer, a cabinet, or an opaque container inside a closed box all work. If you like clear glass so you can see what you have, that is fine — just keep the jar somewhere dark and only expose it to light briefly when you open it.

Airtight, and appropriately sized

You want a real seal, meaning a gasket or a proper threaded lid, not a lid that simply rests on top. And you want the container roughly matched to the amount of flower in it. Stable is better than perfect

Glass mason jars: the standard for good reason

Wide-mouth glass canning jars are the best value in hemp storage, full stop. Glass is chemically inert, so it will not absorb terpenes or leach anything into your flower. Better than bags, worse than glass. A quality gasketed food container will hold humidity reasonably well, but plastic can absorb terpenes over time, carries the same static issue to a lesser degree, and can impart a faint plastic note. Silicone containers have similar limitations and are more prone to holding smells. Fine as a stopgap, not a long-term plan.

Purpose-built curing containers

Sizing and placement

Packs are sold by weight. A small 4 gram pack suits containers holding up to roughly an ounce; 8 gram packs cover a few ounces; 67 gram packs are for large volumes. Undersizing means the pack cannot keep up and gets exhausted fast. Keep the pack from resting directly against buds if you can — direct contact can make the touching bud slightly damp — by using a container with a pack holder or laying a small piece of parchment between them.

When to replace

These are consumables. A pack has reached the end of its life when it turns hard and crunchy, meaning it has given up its moisture, or when it feels swollen and sloshy, meaning it is saturated. Keep your working stash separate

If you bought several strains or a larger quantity, decant a week's worth into a small jar and leave the rest sealed. The bulk container then stays closed and stable instead of being opened multiple times a day.

Long-Term Storage (Months and Beyond)

Buying in quantity is cost-effective, and with a bit of planning six-month-old flower can still be excellent.

The straightforward approach

Portion your flower into multiple jars, each nearly full, each with a 58% pack, all in a dark, cool, temperature-stable interior closet. Label each jar with the strain and the date you sealed it. Vacuum sealing

Removing oxygen dramatically slows oxidation, which makes vacuum sealing genuinely effective for long storage. The tradeoff is physical: standard vacuum sealers crush buds and knock off trichomes. If you freeze, vacuum seal first, freeze once, and thaw the entire sealed package fully to room temperature before opening it — opening a cold container pulls warm humid air onto cold flower and you will get moisture where you least want it. Keep strains separate

Terpenes migrate. Store two distinctly aromatic cultivars together for a month and both will smell like a blend of the two. If you paid for specific strain character, give each one its own sealed jar.

Should You Store Pre-Rolls Differently?

Yes. Pre-rolls are more fragile than loose flower and need slightly different handling.

Why they dry out faster

A pre-roll has a huge amount of ground flower surface area exposed to whatever air is inside the tube, plus a paper wrapper that wicks moisture. Ground material stales far faster than intact buds, which is why a pre-roll left in an open tube for two weeks smokes like a completely different product.

Keep them in rigid, sealed tubes

Half-smoked joints

If you put out a joint partway through, drop it back into a sealed tube. The exposed burnt end will still taste worse the next day, but sealing it slows the drying and keeps the ash smell from spreading through everything nearby.

Signs Your Hemp Has Gone Bad

Stale flower is disappointing. Contaminated flower is a different matter. Know how to tell them apart.

Mold and mildew: the serious one

Look for gray, white, or bluish fuzz that sits on the surface with a cobweb-like texture, dark or slimy spots, or clumping where buds have stuck together. Smell is often the earliest signal — a musty, damp-basement, or ammonia-like odor means stop. The common confusion is trichomes versus mold: trichomes are discrete, crystalline, and sparkle under light, while mold is diffuse, matte, and web-like. Signs it has simply dried out

This flower is safe, just diminished. Color and appearance changes

Healthy cured hemp shows greens ranging from bright to deep, sometimes with purple accents, and amber-tinted trichomes. Uniform brown or yellowing across the bud indicates significant degradation. Bleached, pale, washed-out coloring typically means light exposure. Neither is dangerous, but both mean the potency and character have moved on.

The smell test is your best tool
